Dr. Dale K. Heuer received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Northwestern University. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and a two-year National Research Service Award-funded glaucoma fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami School of Medicine. He served on the full-time faculty of the University of Florida College of Medicine (1984-1986) and University of Southern California School of Medicine (1986-1997). Since 1997, Dr. Heuer has been professor and chair of ophthalmology at MCW, where he also serves as the director of the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Eye Institute.

He has published extensively on the use of conventional filtering procedures with newer aqueous shunt procedures and wound-healing modulation for the management of glaucomas with poor surgical prognoses. Dr. Heuer has participated in several glaucoma clinical trials, including three landmark studies on various treatment effectiveness and options; he is also one of the three vice chairs of the National Eye Institute-sponsored Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study.

Dr. Heuer currently serves in the following capacities: board director for the American Board of Ophthalmology; member-at-large on the American Glaucoma Society Board of Directors; member of the Safety & Data Monitoring Committees of the Ahmed-Baerveldt Comparison Study and Primary Tube Versus Trabeculectomy Study; and consulting member of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s Ophthalmic Device Panel. He was the founding board chair and former board member for Friends for Health in Haiti.
